Large public-sector healthcare organisation in Northern Ireland
What Was the Ask?
The client sought to explore opportunities to transition from fossil fuel-based heating to low-carbon alternatives. They required a feasibility study to assess whether geothermal energy could provide a reliable, efficient, and sustainable heat source for one of their key healthcare facilities.
Our Approach
The Centre for Competitiveness (CforC), in collaboration with a leading geothermal energy developer, conducted a comprehensive Phase 1 feasibility study.
Key elements included:
– Analysing building energy consumption to determine actual heating and cooling demands.
– Reviewing subsurface geological data to evaluate geothermal potential.
– Comparing multiple low-carbon heat solutions for technical and financial viability.
– Recommending a phased roadmap to reduce uncertainty and support investment decisions.
The Outcome
The study identified a deep geothermal system as the most viable and cost-effective option to deliver significant carbon and cost savings over the project lifecycle. While specific findings are confidential, the work enabled the client to:
– Establish a clear pathway to achieve decarbonisation targets.
– Build a strong business case for renewable energy transition.
– Engage with stakeholders and funding partners to advance project development.
A Deep Geothermal Heat Pump system could deliver at least a 75% reduction in carbon emissions compared with the current gas heating system.
Why It Matters
This engagement highlights the value of expert facilitation and evidence-based analysis in helping organisations make strategic sustainability investments. It demonstrates how geothermal energy can play a key role in achieving Northern Ireland’s net-zero ambitions.
