Are you Supplier Ready? Building the Capability to Compete in Aerospace and Defence
seperator

Winning a place in the aerospace and defence supply chain requires more than having the right product or technical capability. For organisations looking to become suppliers to major aerospace and defence companies, the question customers are asking is increasingly simple: Can you consistently deliver what we need, to the required standard, and demonstrate that you can continue to do so? Being supplier-ready means having the systems, processes, people, and performance capability to give customers that confidence.

What does supplier-ready really mean?

A potential customer may be interested in your product, technology, or manufacturing capability. But before committing to a new supplier, they also need confidence in how the organisation operates. That means being able to demonstrate capability across areas such as:

These are not simply boxes to tick. They are indicators of whether an organisation has the capability and discipline to perform consistently within a demanding supply chain.

Certification is evidence capability is the goal.

Frameworks such as SC21 provide a structured way for organisations to assess and strengthen their performance. But the real value is not the certificate or recognition itself. It is the improvement journey behind it.

SC21 focuses on developing supply chain performance through structured improvement, with recognised performance measures across areas such as quality, delivery, and cost. For organisations working towards recognition, this creates a framework for understanding where capability is strong, where gaps exist and where improvement is needed.

Build the capability before the opportunity arrives.

One of the risks for organisations seeking to enter new supply chains is waiting until an opportunity appears before addressing capability gaps. By then, there may be limited time to strengthen processes, improve performance, or develop the evidence required by a potential customer. Building supplier readiness proactively means being better positioned when opportunities arise. It can also create benefits beyond winning new business – reduce variation, earlier identification of problems, improve productivity and reduce waste.

Most importantly, better-defined processes can make it easier for people across the organisation to understand how their work contributes to customer requirements.

The capability built for the supply chain can strengthen the business.

What should organisations focus on?

There is no single checklist that makes an organisation supplier ready.

The priorities will depend on the organisation, its customers, products, and position within the supply chain.

However, a useful starting point is to consider five questions:

From assessment to Competitive Advantage

For organisations seeking to grow within aerospace and defence, frameworks such as SC21 and Aero Excellence can provide valuable structure for strengthening capability and demonstrating performance. But the objective should extend beyond achieving recognition. The real opportunity is to build an organisation that customers can trust – one that can demonstrate control, deliver consistently, manage risk, and continually improve.

That is what makes supplier readiness commercially valuable.
