What do we mean by Competitiveness?
seperator

Competitiveness is one of those words that gets used a lot – but rarely explained.

For some organisations, it means cutting costs. For others, it’s about innovationgrowth, improving productivityexporting, increasing market share, or winning new contracts. And for many, it’s simply about surviving and staying relevant in a fast-changing world.

In a world of rising costs, skills shortages, and constant change, competitiveness isn’t optional. It’s the difference between reacting to challenges and being ready for them.

At the Centre for Competitiveness, we focus our supports to ensure you can build a Sustainable Competitive Advantage. For us, competitiveness is an organisation’s ability to perform well today, adapt to change, and remain successful tomorrow. It’s not about being “better than everyone else” for its own sake. It’s about being fit for purpose, future-ready, and confident in your direction.

Why competitiveness matters (now more than ever)

Organisations today face constant pressure:

Rising costs and tighter margins

Skills shortages and capacity constraints

Rapid technological change

Sustainability and decarbonisation demands

Increasing customer, funder, and regulatory expectations

In this environment, competitiveness isn’t a luxury – it’s essential.

Competitive organisations:

Use their resources more effectively

Make better, faster decisions

Innovate with purpose, not buzzwords

Deliver consistent value to customers and stakeholders

Are more resilient in the face of uncertainty

Grow/scale in a sustainable manner

In short, they are better equipped to navigate changeCompetitiveness looks different for every organisation

For a manufacturer, it might mean:

For an agri-food business, it could be:

For a public or voluntary organisation, competitiveness may mean:

That’s why competitiveness is not a checklist – it’s context-specific

Our role: turning competitiveness into practical action

This is where the Centre for Competitiveness comes in. We help organisations understand what competitiveness means for them, assess where they are now, identify what really matters – and what doesn’t, and, turn insight into practical, achievable actions. We don’t offer one-size-fits-all solutions. We work alongside organisations to strengthen the foundations that matter most

Strategy and direction

Operational effectiveness

Meaningful performance management

Innovation and project delivery

Sustainability and waste-to-value opportunities

Skills, leadership, and collaboration

Competitiveness isn’t about doing everything. It’s about doing the right things well. It’s an ongoing process of learning, improving, and adapting. Our role is simple: To help organisations build the capability and confidence to compete – now and in the future.
